Finding the best engine oil for your car.

Finding the best engine oil for your car can be a daunting task, as there are so many options in the market. Considering the fact that your engine oil choice is a very important factor in the longevity of your engine and it affects your overall vehicle performance, making this choice is something that you’ll like to get right, so you can enjoy your car for longer.

How do engine oils work?

What are the numbers and letters on the engine oil cans?

You might have seen some strange numbers on your engine oil cans like 5W-20, and after much contemplation, you just grabbed the most familiar or the cheapest one from the shelf, at least I know I have done this on multiple occasions and I just end up hoping that it doesn’t cause any havoc to my engine.

This was one of the primary reasons I decided to do some research on what these numbers actually mean. I discovered that these numbers and letters aren’t just to complete the default engine brand designs that we’ve come to be familiar with, but they are actually the viscosity level of the engine oil and the winter temperature protection.

I’m sure the science students know this but for the rest of us, viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flow. So if we have 2 liquids like water and honey, we can say that honey has a higher level of viscosity as it tends to flow a lot slower than water. So, for engine oils the viscosity level of the oil is the speed at which the engine oil flows in and around the engine to protect all its moving parts.

Now that we understand what viscosity means, let’s take a look at the numbers and letters on the can and try to decode what it means. So if we have 5W20; the number before the “W”, is the minimum temperature at which the oil can operate, a lower number is better for colder climates as the “W” here stands for weight, while the number after this is the weight of the oil.

That’s why basic conventional oil like 20w50 is thicker oil and gives the engine more work to do because its has to break down the weight of the oil from 50 to say 30 or 20 depending on the vehicle which in turn shortens lifespan of vehicle. The engine oil doesn’t need to be too thick while starting up the engine, because the engine would require more energy to to turn the crankshaft and this would affect fuel consumption.
